Botox

Botulinum toxin, or botox, has been used in medicine since the 1960’s, but it was only after 2000 that it started to be used for migraine. The large study PREEMPT in 2010 showed that it was effective, but only for chronic migraine. Botox is given as 31 injections following the schema below, and then repeated approximately every 12 weeks. The effect often comes very gradually. The side effects involve unwanted weakness of the neck or the eyebrow, but the injections themselves can be painful or trigger a migraine. You can read more in the patient information leaflet.
